Call for contributors / presenters

The 7 th annual National Digital Forum conference will be held in Auckland for the first time on November 27-28, 2008 at the Owen G Glenn Building, the University of Auckland Business School .

The National Digital Forum (NDF) is a coalition of museums, archives, art galleries, libraries and government departments with more than 120 member organisations committed to collectively building New Zealand’s culture and heritage online.

This year’s conference theme is Creating value in a digital New Zealand. The conference’s proceedings will assist in defining the role New Zealand’s digital content providers have in making New Zealand stories and images easily accessible here and around the globe, so creating value for users of digital content from communities, education, and business. The theme allows us to consider some key questions: Why are we putting all this effort into digitisation? How are we doing it? How are we connecting with other institutions? What are we learning ourselves and ultimately, who benefits and in what way?

Last year’s annual NDF conference was the largest ever, attracting over 350 participants. We expect this year’s attendance to equal or better this.

Responding to calls for more interaction, this year’s conference will have a stimulating mix of international keynote speakers, forums, workshops, and demonstrations. A draft outline of the conference programme can be found at the bottom of this page.

We would like the forums to focus on discussions which will help NDF meet its objective - that is: “facilitating a national approach to building collections of digital cultural heritage resources by identifying opportunities for organisations to collaborate, cooperate and share information with each other".

We are inviting presenters who can offer forum leadership, great facilitation, stimulating workshops and inspiring demonstrations to send us their abstracts. We would like to hear from people who can lead or present:

Forums – we are looking for discussion leaders, facilitators and recorders. There will be four concurrent sessions on set topics. Areas for focus might be intellectual property, Creative Commons, copyright, indigenous knowledge, sharing data, cross-collection collaboration, APIs, or mash-ups. Each forum will have a leader to set the discussion’s context (approximately 20 minutes), a facilitator to manage the discussion, and a recorder.

Workshops – will provide learning opportunities for attendees. This is an opportunity for you to share your skills and knowledge about topics such as project planning, p odcasting, web writing, intellectual property, Creative Commons, indigenous knowledge rights, mash-ups, user testing, funding, marketing or other topics you feel would be relevant to the conference theme. Workshops will run for approximately 90 minutes with up to 60 attendees. Computers with internet access provided.

Demonstrations – this is an opportunity for you to present your project/product to other attendees, describe what you have been up to, what you have achieved and for others to learn. If selected, you will have about an hour to display and talk one-to-one or in a group at a booth about your methodology, successes, and issues.  Computers with internet access provided.

If you want to participate in any of the above, please send an abstract (300 words approximately) and details of presenters to the conference organisers at conference@paardekooper.co.nz

The deadline to receive your abstract is 11 August 2008 (very soon!).

Registration for the conference will open early August. We look forward to meeting you there.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
